Early School Days - in his own words

My memories go back as far as kindergarden. We live in an adobe house on Deloris Ave. in Douglas, Ariz. across from a park and the twin water towers. Lived there until I was in the fifth grade. Still remember some of the kids and our teacher, Miss Carson. Our neighbor and my mother made Mary Lou Splawn and I walk to school hand in hand. She and I were in the same school for many years, but never held hands again. One reunion we were looking at our grade school pictures and realized that there were no Mexican or black kids in them. Discrimination was all around us, but I wasn't aware of it until I grew older. Means I started school in 1938 at "C" Avenue school and later to "A" Avenue. Don't think we became integrated until the end of World War 2. For many years I was proud of our high school for not playing Bowie High School when we had two black football players on our team, only to find out when I visited Walter Joe Williams, one of the black players, in San Jose, Ca. a few years ago that we did play them without Walter Joe and Authur Lawrence. What a shame! I still see the quarterback of that team, and that's the next bit.
